| (8/7) St. Petersburg, FL – Northern Little League’s 11-12 all-stars found themselves
in unfamiliar territory Monday night in their final pool game against Florida but a 5-run sixth inning,
capped by a 2-out walk-off grand slam off the bat of Cody Walker, gave the Georgia champions a 10-6
victory and earned them a #1 seed heading to the semifinals. Northern opened the scoring in the bottom half of the first when J. T. Phillips (2-for-3, 2B, R, 2RBI) doubled in two runs and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Georgia team a 3-0 lead. But Florida struck for 6 runs in the top half of the 3rd inning. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Ben Emery who launched a deep homerun to give Florida the 4-3 lead. Northern committed their first defensive miscues of the tournament netting Florida their final two runs of the inning and giving them a 6-3 lead. After holding Florida scoreless in the top half of the 4th, Northern began to chip away at the 3-run deficit when Kyle Rovig (1-for-3, HR, R, RBI) launched a solo homerun to right-centerfield. Kyle Carter (1-for-2, HR, 3R, 1RBI, 2BB) opened the 5th inning with a solo shot of his own (his 5th of the tournament) to close the gap to one run. Northern manager Randy Morris started Phillips but pulled him after one inning to keep him available for the semifinal game. Brady Hamilton replaced Phillips and pitched through the 5th inning. Rovig came in to pitch a scoreless 6th, picking up the win and setting the stage for the dramatic comeback. Hamilton led off the inning with a walk on a full count pitch and advanced to second and third on wild pitches. Rovig struck out swinging and Ryan Lang (1-for-3, R, RBI) stepped to the plate and drilled a single to right scoring Hamilton and tying the score at six. Matthew Hollis then grounded out to short with Lang moving to third. Carter was intentionally walked and Josh Lester (2-for-2, 2R, 2BB) drew a full-count walk to load the bases. Walker (2-for-4, HR, 1R, 4RBI) launched a 1-0 pitch for his fourth homerun of the tournament, a game-winning blast over the right field fence. Northern now faces Alabama, the #2 seed from Pool A on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. while Florida and North Carolina have the other semifinal game at 7:00 p.m. The semifinal game will be web cast. The winners will play for the championship Friday night at 7:00 p.m. on a game that will be broadcast live on ESPN. The tournament champion will then go to Williamsport, PA to represent the region in the Little League World Series August 18-27. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
