| (8/20) Williamsport, PA – Southeastern champion Northern Little League from Columbus, Georgia faced
the West champions from Phoenix, Arizona and came out on top by a score of 4 to 1. No rain delays today, no extra
innings, just six innings of good baseball. No runs scored in the first in an inning that had five strikeouts. J. T. Phillips had a lead-off walk in the second inning but was stranded there. In the third inning, the Southeast team struck first with a 268-foot homerun from Kyle Carter that landed in the outfield crowd. The West team got it right back in the bottom half when the number nine hitter reached on an error. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a groundout that third baseman Mason Meyers fielded and threw to first baseman Brady Hamilton for the out. He scored on a wild pitch, giving the West team the tie without getting a hit. Southeast went ahead again in the fourth inning when J. T. Phillips hit a homerun to right center. It looked like the West team would tie it again in the bottom half when the first hitter singled and went to second on a fielder's choice. After a walk, the Southeast team tried a trick play by having pitcher Kyle Carter intentionally miss the throw back from catcher Cody Walker in order to pick off the runner at second. The ball got by shortstop J. T. Phillips who was shielded by the runner and the runner ran to third. With one out, Carter got the strikeout and the last batter flew out to third base to end the scoring threat. In the sixth inning, Josh Lester led off with a double just inside the first base line. He strayed too far off second base and was tagged out when Cody Walker hit a ball back to the pitcher. Phillips walked and Patrick Stallings hit a single to score Walker. Hamilton followed with another single to score Phillips. On the play, Mason Meyers, running for Stallings was thrown out at the plate. In the bottom half of the inning, Carter picked up another strikeout, his ninth, and the final out was made when the third hitter grounded out to Brady Hamilton at first. The win improves Southeast to 2-0 as they take Monday off and play the final game of pool play on Tuesday at 8:00 against Lemont, Illinois from the Great Lakes region. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
