| (8/26) Williamsport, PA – Time to play for the Little League World Series title for the Southeast
champions from Northern Little League. They became the United States champions with a 7-3 victory over the
Northwest champions from Beaverton, Oregon. Southeast got on the scoreboard early. Kyle Carter started off the inning with a groundout. Josh Lester followed with a walk but was out at second when Cody Walker hit a ground ball to the shortstop. His hustle to first on the play kept it from being a double play. J. T. Phillips walked. Patrick Stallings got the first hit of the game with a single that scored Walker. Brady Hamilton singled to score Phillips, the second run of the inning. Kyle Rovig hit a shot that ate up the shortstop to score Stallings. The second inning went three-up and three-down for Southeast but Cody Walker started off the third inning with a single over the head of the third baseman. J. T. Phillips followed with a single up the middle right by the pitcher's ear. Northwest's pitcher then found his groove and struck out the next three batters to end the inning. Northwest scored their first run in the fourth inning as the leadoff hitter singled and scored on the single from the next batter. The next batter hit a shot towards right field that was stabbed out of the air by Kyle Carter at first. Phillips struck out the next hitter but the number eight hitter in the lineup hit a homerun over the left field fence to tie the game at 3. Southeast made sure the game didn't stay tied long. With one out in the fifth inning, J. T. Phillips coaxed a full-count walk. He took second on a straight steal that paid off when, with two outs, Brady Hamilton hit a pitch to shallow center field and Phillips was able to score from second. Without the steal, the run doesn't score. Southeast picked up some big insurance runs in the top of the sixth. Ryan Lang started the inning with a walk. He advanced to second on an errant pick-off attempt at first. Northwest intentionally walked Kyle Carter but in the process, the pitcher threw the ball over the catcher's head allowing Lang to advance to third. Once again, the intentional pass didn't work as Josh Lester came through with a run-scoring single. Cody Walker followed up with a deep fly to left field just out of reach of the left-fielder and Carter and Lester scored on the double. Phillips and Stallings followed with hard hit balls to left field and right field but both were caught to end the inning. In the sixth, the first Northwest hitter grounded out to shortstop Josh Lester. The next hitter flew out to Matthew Hollis playing a deep second base. Phillips went to a full count to the number 8 hitter who had burned them in the fourth inning, but this time he hit a foul pop up that catcher Cody Walker ran to and with a diving catch made the put-out. Before the game, parents from the Southeast team presented parents from the Northwest team some good Georgia peaches. After the game, the victorious Southeast team invited the runners-up from Northwest to participate in their victory lap. No team in the Little League World Series is a loser but rather among the best eight teams in the country. The International champion will be decided at 7:30 tonight and will be Mexico or Asia. The winner will play our U.S. Champions on Sunday at 3:30. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
